Discussing the subject lets your child know you are interested and willing to talk and listen.

* What does a parent need to look for? * Changes in physical appearance, friends and school behavior (falling grades, cutting classes, discipline problems) * An attitude of acceptance for other people's substance use * Smell of alcohol on breath or smell of burnt rope (marijuana) on clothing * Mood swing, particularly when a child comes home from being out with friends * Withdrawal from family * Vague and secretive about friends and social activities * Loss of interest in activities that once were appealing * Trouble with law enforcement
